Banff Rafting Association

ALBERTA, CANADA – Whether you are on a gentle scenic float or taking on the challenge of higher class rapids, there are numerous opportunities to view the interesting wildlife along the banks of the Kicking Horse River. Black bears, elk, bighorn mountain sheep and mountain goat are some of the animals that populate this region of Alberta, Canada.

Banff has a robust elk population numbering in the thousands. The Vermilion Lakes Drive, the Buffalo Paddock, the Banff Springs golf course and the Bow Valley Parkway are all excellent venues for seeing and photographing elk, and the town of Banff itself is frequented by elk intent on eating the greenery in local yards and escaping the predators they would face anywhere else in the park. Elk will also congregate along the banks of the Kicking Horse River.

Moose are on the decline, due in part to a deadly liver fluke, the return of wolves after a long absence, and an unnaturally high number of deaths on the railways and highways. However, you still have a good chance of spotting a moose along the banks of the Kicking Horse River.

Bighorn sheep are abundant throughout the area, and are most commonly seen along the Bow Valley Parkway at Backswamp, on the Mount Norquay and Lake Minnewanka roads, and at the top of the gondola ride on Sulphur Mountain.

Banff has a healthy population of mountain goats, but has very few good places to view them from roads or short trails. Watch for them high on the cliffs above the Kicking Horse River.

“Keep your eyes open and look up at the river banks and the cliff edges,” said John Arbol, expert white water rafting guide at the Kicking Horse River. “It’s always a treat to see one of Canada’s spectacular specimens of wildlife in their natural habitat.”

BANFF, ALBERTA (CANADA) – The Kicking Horse River is more than a vacation destination for tourists or families in search of white water rafting fun on these rapids in Alberta, Canada. It is also a popular corporate trip for employers and team leaders who use the excursion as an opportunity to do some team building in a fun and safe environment.

Braving nature together in the wilderness of Banff along the Kicking Horse River can help create a stronger, more effective team in the office. Follow the tips provided from the Banff Rafting Association’s approved outfitters for a successful exercise!

Corporate Team Building Guidelines

It is important to select a team building message as a central theme for your day on the Kicking Horse River. Deal with changes in the office to developing confidence with calculated risk taking.

Clearly identify and define your goals.

Arrange for transportation to the rafting site for your staff. Employers can create more team building by traveling together by a van or bus.

Do the research. Rafting outfitters are able to customize the outing to meet your needs, including providing motivational instruction that ties in with your team building message.

Be sure your staff can handle the adventure. There are weight concerns, and other health-related issues. Also, it is required people know how to swim.

Plan a cookout for the end of the trip as a reward for braving the rapids together. As your team collects, encourage each member to share a story about the day’s adventure.

Use the ride home to allow your staff time for quiet contemplation of the day’s events. After going head-to-head with the rapids, the staff should be tired but also ready to face the every-day tasks of life in the office.

GOLDEN, BC (CANADA) – Tourists flock to Golden, British Columbia from May through September every year to test their meddle white water rafting on this stretch of Canada’s Kicking Horse River – a beautiful, glacier-fed body of water with a stunning turquoise color.

“Nothing beats getting cooled off by the water while rafting here,” said John Arbol, an experienced Kicking Horse River white water rafting guide.

One of the appeals of this part of the Kicking Horse River is there are rapids for every level of rafter. Beginners can start out on Class II white water rapids, while experts can take on the Class IV waters.

“If you are looking to take your family on a white water adventure, a scenic float on the Kicking Horse is a perfect option. There is a lot to see and do, while giving your kids their first taste of adventure,” said Arbol. “Later in the Upper Canyon for those that continue on, there are a lot of Class III and IV, so be prepared for a thrilling ride.”

Lower Canyon – Kicking Horse River
There is unbelievable scenery in the Kicking Horse River’s Lower Canyon. There are huge, high canyon walls on both sides of rafters, while the river also boasts an amazing set of rapids with continues Class IV waters found here.

“After the adrenaline rush of white water rafting is over here there is a relaxing float along calm water through town,” said Arbol.

Banff Rafting Association outfitters Hydra, Wild Water and Maligne Rafting offer the most up-to-date information to plan your white water rafting trip to Canada. Read on for answers to the most frequently asked questions by visitors about rafting in and around Alberta and BC, Canada.

Is rafting dangerous?

White water rafting is an adventurous outdoor activity so there is a degree of risk. Banff Rafting Association outfitters provide the best guides to ensure the safety of all participants is the utmost priority.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Basic swimming ability is required to go white water rafting.

Will I fall out?

It is always a possibility, but there are handles in place on every boat to hold onto – professional guides actually tell you when to hold on as well. The guides also give detailed safety instructions before the adventure begins.

What class are the rapids?

10 percent are class 1, 40 percent class 2, 30 percent class 3 and 20 percent class 4. Class 4 rapids are the highest rapids operators are legally allowed to raft.

Do agencies do half day trips?

Most agencies do either 3-4 hours in duration (Kicking Horse River) or 6-8 hours in duration, depending on the trip. This often includes river time, lunch, a safety talk and time for gearing up.

What part the river do you raft?

It depends on the agency, but usually trips on the upper and lower canyon of the river are offered.

Is the water cold?

The Kicking Horse River is glacier fed, so the water is always cold no matter the time of day or year.

How many people in each raft?

8 rafters plus the guide.

Will my group be able to be in the same raft?

Rafters are usually divided into groups at the river base. Inform the guides know how many people in your group and you will be rafting together. If your group is more than 8 people, then you may be spilt across several rafts.

What size do your wetsuits go up to?

Most outfitters provide wetsuits up to XXXL, but there is a maximum weight restriction of 300 lbs to go white water rafting.

Can I bring a camera?

Yes, but make sure it is waterproof. Also, you will be very busy paddling so there are not a lot of great photo opportunities while rafting.
